WearDeck™ is structural decking, rated to span a superior 24 inches on center — strong enough that a builder can legitimately use fewer joists. Most decking is not structural and needs 16″ centers. We frame at 12″ anyway: roughly double the structural integrity the deck material actually requires, on a material that already outperforms everything else in the category.

THE INDUSTRY NORM

Builders max out the allowable spread. Wider spacing means fewer joists, less material, less labor. It passes inspection. It is the cheapest way to build a dock that still gets a sticker.

STRAIGHT BY DESIGN.

THE STANDARD

Most contractors install stringers staggered. We install wood butt to butt, which produces a single continuous screwline running the length of the dock, parallel to the seawall cap. Every fastener lines up. The runs are straight, unbroken, and squared to the wall behind them.

THE INDUSTRY NORM

Staggered stringers leave a broken, wandering line of fasteners that never aligns to anything. It is faster to install and it passes inspection — and the finished dock reads as assembled rather than built.

Wood is still the king of decking materials for economy and strength — but not all wood is created equal. Natural dock materials split into three families: pressure-treated lumber, western softwoods, and tropical hardwoods. The right choice depends on color, board size, maintenance appetite, and budget.

Not All “Pressure Treated” Is The Same

Big-box store boards are generally not rated for salt water or harsh marine environments. Marine work requires Ground Contact or Marine Grade treatment — and the treatment tag on the end of the board is what tells you. We source through Decks & Docks specifically because they stock marine-grade, higher-grade Southern Yellow Pine rather than commodity lumber.

WHY IT MATTERS TO YOU

In salt water, galvanized fasteners are the first thing to fail. Hardware failure means structural failure — years before the decking or framing shows any wear. Stainless is the difference between a dock that ages and a dock that has to be rebuilt.

We own our pile-driving equipment and hammer. Pilings are driven to refusal — hammered until the pile will not advance further, the point of maximum bearing capacity.

THE INDUSTRY NORM

Many crews jet pilings, washing them into the substrate with pressurized water. Faster and cheaper — but it liquefies the surrounding soil and the pile never achieves true refusal bearing.

WHY IT MATTERS TO YOU

A driven pile carries the load it was designed to carry. A jetted pile can settle, shift, and lose capacity — which shows up as a dock that goes out of level.

ANSWERS BEFORE YOU ASK.

Most residential docks take 3–6 weeks of on-water construction once permits are in hand. Permitting is the long pole — typically 2–6 months in Broward and Palm Beach depending on which agencies the site triggers. We start the permit process the day the design is approved.

Yes, and almost always more than one. A dock can require municipal, county, state (FDEP environmental resource) and federal (Army Corps) approval, plus HOA review in many waterfront communities. All Power Marine handles every layer of it in-house — you never talk to a government office.

Composite is manufactured — typically wood fibre, PVC, or mineral in a polymer matrix — and needs no sanding, staining, or sealing. Wood is cheaper up front, takes more upkeep, and varies enormously in marine suitability: a tropical hardwood like Ipe can outlast almost anything, while commodity pressure-treated pine is not rated for salt water at all.

A properly built dock with stainless hardware and driven pilings should run 25–40 years or more. What usually fails first is not the decking — it is the hardware and the substructure. That is why we use 100% stainless and frame at 12″ on center.

Cost is driven by length, water depth, piling count, decking material, and permitting complexity. We quote after an on-site assessment rather than over the phone, because a number given without seeing the seawall and the water depth is a guess.

A driven pile is hammered until it will not advance further — refusal — which is the point of maximum bearing capacity. Jetting uses pressurized water to wash the pile down into the substrate. Jetting is faster and cheaper, but it liquefies the surrounding soil and the pile never achieves true refusal bearing, so it can settle and go out of level. We own our own hammer and we drive every pile.

Joist spacing determines how far the decking has to span unsupported. Wider spacing means fewer joists, less material, and less labour — and more deflection underfoot. WearDeck™ is rated to span 24″ on center and most decking needs 16″. We frame at 12″ regardless, which is roughly double the structure the material requires.

Yes, and it is the better way to do it. Designing the dock and the lift slip together means the framing, piling layout, and electrical are planned as one system instead of retrofitted later.
